Sony’s Playstation 5 launch triggers retail pandemonium

Soaring demand for the new Sony Playstation caused pandemonium and disruptions for retailers which, with only five shopping weeks until Christmas, are heavily dependent on their online sales channels.


Tesco and John Lewis saw their webpages crash at times this morning as thousands of shoppers logged on, meanwhile, Currys PC World reportedly had tens of thousands of would-be customers in the sort of digital queue normally used for major sport events or concerts.


Amazon, Smyths Toys, Argos and Game all marked the Sony console as “out of stock”.


Broadband, telecoms and TV bundler BT Group looked to capitalise with a portal that allowed its MyBT broadband customers to order a PS5, similarly, under its EE brand, its customers could order and pay over 11 months by adding the console to their mobile payment plans.


Elsewhere, courier YODEL publicly dismissed claims by Game, to customers by via email, that delayed deliveries of ‘pre-ordered’ console were its responsibility.


“Yodel does not work directly with Game,” a Yodel spokesperson is quoted, in a report. “Our client is GFS, a fulfilment business who work in partnership with Game. We have been consistently clear on the order volumes we are able to carry for them and it is deeply disappointing that Yodel’s name has been incorrectly used in an email to customers on the status of orders.


“There are currently no delays within our network, and any issues regarding delivery capacity is a matter for GFS and not Yodel.”
