In what is one of the largest single apprenticeship programmes in the UK, the group’s Postal Apprenticeship scheme was announced on Thursday.
The scheme will result in a permanent role for those successful, as well as a broad range of transferable skills and experience and a Level 2 certification.
Around 80 per cent of the apprenticeship will take the form of on-the-job training, with apprentices carrying out day-to-day duties as a delivery postman or postwoman with other time spent completing learning towards the apprenticeship.
Applications open on June 28 and recruitment will run from 13 months from September, with an initial cohort of 500 apprentices, before a further 500 roles across the business from 2022.
Perhaps the big news of the week for the company came earlier in the week, with the announcement that new shorts are to be worn by postmen and women.
A trial of the new shorts, “designed to better suit contemporary delivery rounds”, has proved successful and will usher in the first change to Royal Mail’s uniform in over ten years.
